Puzzleman Leung – TRANS-FIGURATION
Summer
TRANS-FIGURATION
Whenever I stare at an object for a long time, I will start wondering the meaning of that object. My interest has always been in the function of objects and the meaning of their existence. Objects exist because of functionality. However, if their function has been removed, what is the meaning remaining of it? Do they have any value left for their existence? For me, it is very interesting to experiment on removing the original function of an object and replace it with another function. For example, when I was a kid, I would squash the soda can and use it as a football to play. Under this context, I begin the series of TRANS-FIGURATION.
Roland Barthes mentioned in his book 《L’ Empire Des Signes》 that Japanese low price products often use glamorous packaging to convince consumers to believe the contents inside match the value of the packaging outside. In daily life, symbols which are represented by objects have been embedded deep into our mind concepts. Once these objects have been taken out from its original symbolic meaning, people will have a different perception towards them.
In this series of work, I try to explore the possibility that an ordinary object can surpass its original meaning through combinations of them, and by destroying their original impression, another layer of meaning can be created from them.
